Types of sounds:

Many of the methods I mention below are picked up from watching Foley artist at work online but also I have incorporated some of my own methods. Rather than using actors for the climbing sound effects I have chosen to use shoes. It is unlikely that we will actually have actors climbing walls any time soon for the recordings and it seems unnecessary when there are more simplistic, yet effective, methods available. This is why I am choosing to have an actor hold onto the shoes and drag them down the rough, abrasive surface.

Equipment:

Of course, I will need a Shotgun Microphone, a Morantz kit and Headphones to carry out a live review of all audio, both recorded and that of which is to be recorded. It is a very simplistic list of requirements and yet the results tend to be most effective and high standard. OF course, additional wiring to connect the devices to each other are required however these come along with the Morantz kit.

Here is the video I watched on a previous media course, I re-watched it during the research process of Unit 5:

Gary Hecker is a Foley artist and here is a display of some of the interesting and wonderfully simplistic methods he uses for creating perfect sound to add to picture.

Sound(s) Methods & Materials used Locations When these will be completed
Man climbing building Leather shoes being brushed against concrete or a material equally as abrasive and likely to generate a reasonable amount of sound. TV Studio 32/01/17
Crowd Reactions Perhaps a group of two or three performing reactions of the crowd. In post-production I will layer these performances over each other stationing some further along than others until it sounds like a crowd rather than a few people. TV Studio 32/01/17
Traffic & Tram I will venture outside college up towards the Hillsborough exchange and record the passing traffic. I will also record the tram as it passes by then alter the sound of it in post-production. Outside college. (Nearby Hillsborough exchange) 07/02/17
Wind I will record an electric fan in the TV studio. I may also record thin material and/or paper being blown around. I may even record the wind outside college depending on the weather situation at the time. TV Studio/Outside Hillsborough College gates 07/02/17
Work Men & Plank I will record actors handling a wooden plank in the TV studio. They will make it impact with a box of textbooks or paper to give the effect of it hitting the man climbing up the building. I will also record someone scraping a paint brush against a small piece of wood or plastic to give the effect of them painting the room inside the building. TV Studio 08/02/17
Officer being hit I will record two people throwing around an extra curtain from the TV studio to create the effect of the curtain-type material. I will also record them dropping a meter stick or small piece of wood against a box of paper to give the effect of the pole of the curtain rack hitting the officer. TV Studio 08/02/17
The chase I will record two actors running around the TV studio as it has a smooth flooring and will generate the exact sounds I need for the chase sequence between the other man and the officer. Additional slipping and scraping will be performed. TV Studio 32/01/17 or 07/02/17

Moments of audible significance

Sounds to record Materials/Methods used
When the man begins climbing the building Feet scraping against abrasive surface. Crowd cheering and making noise. Traffic rushing by in the background. Old leather shoes. Abrasive surface like concrete. Groups in the TV studio performing different reactions. I may layer over small groups, in post-production, until the effect is sold that it is a crowd reacting instead. Record traffic outside college passing by.
When the man falls Feet rapidly slipping against abrasive surface. Crowd reacting. Rocks and pebbles falling to the ground. Traffic in background. Leather shoes and abrasive surface perhaps concrete. Scraping shoes against surface at a greater speed to give the effect of there being panic and it being unintentional. Groups performing crowd reactions continued. Traffic recordings continued. Rocks and/or small, gritty, light objects being dropped on the floor of the TV studio.
When the curtain roof falls knocking the officer to the ground Heavy curtain material being thrown around. A heavy pole falling and hitting a solid object. Crowd exclaiming. Traffic. Additional curtain from the TV studio being thrown around by two people. Something of a meter stick or small wooden stick to be dropped and then the bass slightly increased in case no heavier objects can be found. Crowd recordings continued. Traffic ambience continued. A box full of text books or paper for impact of pole against officer’s head.
Crowd clapping as man continues climbing Crowd making noise. Numerous different emotional reactions. Traffic. Cable car passing by. Crowd recordings continued. Traffic ambience continued. I intend to record when there is less traffic around as there does not appear to be much traffic around in the film. Tram recorded passing by and then pitch deepened.
Officer chases other man into the building Footsteps hitting smooth surface rapidly. Crowd in the background reacting. Scraping. Wind blowing distantly. Recording of actor running around TV studio as floor is smooth. Crowd performance continued. Recording of electric fan and additional light-weight materials being thrown around. (Perhaps paper)
Men painting room inside building. Paint brush against mildly abrasive surface. Mild wind blowing outside open window. Distant sound of climbing. Paintbrush lightly scraping against wood or plastic sheet. Continued wind performance (Paper/fan/etc) Shoes against concrete.
Wooden plank hitting climbing man Heavy piece of wood hitting solid object. Feet scraping against abrasive surface. Wind blowing. Traffic passing by. Crowd reacting. Wooden plank being dropped on a box of paper or textbooks. Leather shoes against concrete. Traffic recordings continued. Crowd recordings continued. Wind blowing fan recordings continued.
